Classroom Building

Our classroom building is located in the historic St. Francis Cathedral School in the heart of downtown Santa Fe at the corner of Alameda Street and Paseo de Peralta.  From New Mexico School for the Arts, students can walk to Santa Fe’s finest museums, performing arts spaces, and cultural institutions to further their learning in the arts.

The New Mexico School for the Arts campus building was designed by John Gaw Meem, one of New Mexico’s most important architects known for the instrumental role he played in developing and popularizing the Pueblo Revival Style.  The School was constructed in the 1930s and housed the St. Francis Cathedral School until 2006.  Retrofitted in 2010 for New Mexico School for the Arts, our classroom building is rooted in history.  New Mexico School for the Arts has maintained the John Gaw Meem building in its historic form, honoring the past while celebrating our state’s future by developing the creative potential of New Mexico’s artistically talented youth.

Residential Dormitories

New Mexico School for the Arts provides a Residential Program for students who live in areas of New Mexico further away than a reasonable daily commute.  The dormitories provide safe and comfortable weekday living with transportation provided to and from the classroom building.

Residence Facility - Cartwright Hall

Once a student is admitted to New Mexico School for the Arts, he or she can apply to the Residential Program.  Priority is given first to those students with a home distant enough from Santa Fe that it prohibits commuting to New Mexico School for the Arts.  Dormitories will be closed on weekends and holidays, and all students will need to make travel arrangements to return home at these times.

Financial Assistance for the Residential Program

New Mexico School for the Arts and NMSA – Art Institute are committed to making our education available to all qualified New Mexico students who are admitted to the school, regardless of geographic limitations or socio-economic background.  To that end, NMSA – Art Institute provides tuition assistance for the Residential Program.  Financial assistance awards are based on proven economic need and availability of funds.  Students are first accepted to the school on the basis of their passion, potential, and aptitude in the arts, as demonstrated through their written application, recommendations, and their audition.  Students are then considered for financial assistance for the Residential Program through a separate process, and must reapply for finanacial assistance on a yearly basis.  Those students applying for weekday residence and requesting financial assistance should call 505-310-4194 to speak directly with a New Mexico School for the Arts staff member to learn more about financial assistance opportunities for our Residential Program, and to request hardcopies of financial forms.
