Why: An opportunity for young artists who want to learn about and improve their skills in an art form they feel passionate about.

DANCE

The Dance Intensive is designed by NMSA’s Dance Department Chair, Adam McKinney, to give aspiring dancers an opportunity to study with dance professionals. The week will consist of daily classes in various styles of dance including ballet, modern, and jazz. Interested students should have some experience in dance and be able to provide their own dance wear and shoes.

MUSIC (Instrumental)

The Music Intensive will be led by NMSA Music Department Chair, Benjamin Klemme. With the faculty’s guidance, musicians will improve their individual technique as well as their overall knowledge of music. Each day will begin with group vocal training. The rest of the day will be spent in private/small group instruction and ensemble practice. Students will also have the opportunity to learn some music history and theory. The week will culminate in an informal recital.

THEATER.

NMSA Theater Department Chair, Joey Chavez, will lead the Theater Intensive. It promises to be fun and rewarding! Theater students will start each day with vocal training and movement/improvisation classes. The rest of the day will be spent working on monologues and scene work to gain a better sense of character development. The week will culminate in an informal performance.

VISUAL ARTS

The Visual Arts Intensive will be led by NMSA Visual Arts Chair, Cristina Gonzalez. Artists will spend an exciting week concentrating on painting and learning about colors and color mixing. Artists will gain an appreciation for and have a hands-on experience with the medium. By the end of the week, artists will create works that they will be proud to have displayed at the music and theater concert.

Outreach Overview

The New Mexico School for the Arts outreach program will offer opportunities for talented students to stretch the boundaries of their experience in two formats — the Master Class and the Summer Intensive.

Master Classes provide intermediate to advanced students with a one-day experience in arts mastery education from renowned professional artists. Middle and high school students with significant interest in one of four art disciplines — dance, music, theater, or visual arts — will have the opportunity to expand their knowledge.

Summer Intensives provide middle school students with the opportunity to work with a master artist / educator for a more in-depth exploration of their chosen art form. Students will strive to perfect techniques, acquire new skills, and gain a deeper appreciation for art.

For students hoping to one day attend the New Mexico School for the Arts, Master Classes and Intensives will present them with an introduction to the type of educational experience that will be offered.

Please see below for a list of upcoming programs. If there is not a Master Class or Intensive currently planned in your area, please do not be discouraged. Interested students should still fill out an application so that interest in the area can be assessed and he/she can be notified immediately of any local events.

Comments from Past Participants:

“[Stephen Pier] was an amazing teacher who helped me a lot. It was very eye opening.”

– Alexa Johnson, 15 years old, dance student

“I came away understanding the piece better than I had before. Joel Fan was extremely kind and dynamic…he offered some brilliant suggestions.”

– Julia Connor, 18 years old, music student

“I think this was particularly empowering because it validated [my daughter’s] own critical sense as a student…The ability to provide criticism in a way that encourages rather than crushes the student is an important gift in a teacher…I think anyone who has Domenique as an instructor is a very fortunate student”

–Tamara Lichtenstein, mother of Siena Bergt, 11 years old

“I think this world could benefit greatly from these workshops and the school.”

– Ami Germano, 12 years old, theatre student

“My favorite thing about the class was that I learned a completely new style of dance, with ease, and the teachers were very professional and quite talented.”
