Intensive History
Summer Intensives provide middle school age students with the opportunity to work with a master artist / educator for a more in-depth exploration of their chosen art form. Students will strive to perfect techniques, acquire new skills, and gain a deeper appreciation for art.
Week-long Summer Intensives were held in Santa Fe from July 19-23, 2010 and August 17 – 21, 2009. Another week-long Summer Intensive will be held from July 25-29, 2011 in Santa Fe. You can apply on line here!
Description of 2011 Summer Intensive:
Where: Santa Fe
When: July 25-29, 2011
Time: 9:00 am – 3:00 pm
Who: All aspiring artists ages 11 – 14 (grades 6-8)
Why: An opportunity for young artists who want to learn about and improve their skills in an art form they feel passionate about.
How much: $200 (scholarships available)

PURPOSE
New Mexico School for the Art’s Summer Intensive will provide aspiring artists ages 11-14 (grades 6-8) with an opportunity for in-depth study with professionals. If you are an artist passionate about your art and looking to enrich your current instruction or curious about what the instruction at the new charter high school will be like – THIS PROGRAM IS FOR YOU!!
MUSIC (Instrumental or Vocal)
The Music Intensive will be led by NMSA Music Department Chair, Benjamin Klemme and Voice Instructor, Karen Hall. With the faculty’s guidance, musicians and vocalists will improve their individual technique as well as their overall knowledge of music. Each day will begin with a movement class and choral training. The rest of the day will be spent in private/small group instruction and ensemble practice. Students will also have the opportunity to study music theory. The week will culminate in an informal recital.
THEATER
NMSA Theater Department Chair, Joey Chavez, will lead the Theater Intensive. It promises to be fun and rewarding! Theater students will start each day with physical and vocal training. The rest of the day will be spent working on monologues and scene work to gain a better sense of character development. The week will culminate in an informal performance.
VISUAL ARTS
The Visual Arts Intensive will be led by NMSA Visual Arts Chair, Cristina González and Sculptor Edie Tsong. Students will work in both drawing and sculpture over the course of five days. They will receive basic instruction in the elements of two- dimensional and three-dimensional design, using the local environment as a source of inspiration. By the end of the week, artists will create works that they will be proud to have displayed at the music and theater concert.
