Leading Inquiry + Innovation

Adhering to the highest standards of educational excellence, NMSA gives passionate young artists a strong foundation for long-term success in whatever area of study they choose to pursue post-graduation*.

The school’s curriculum is underpinned by a commitment to nurture in students a growth mindset that can help them more fully understand their capability to develop their intelligence through continued practice, temporary setbacks, new strategies and increasing challenges. While artists naturally tend to have a growth mindset as they strive for creativity and mastery in their art, NMSA also applies this iterative approach to academics, giving students the opportunity to focus more on inquiry, innovation and long-term growth, versus short-term achievement.

NMSA systematically fosters this growth through daily support seminars that begin in ninth grade and progress through twelfth grade to help students develop time management and study skills, set academic goals and navigate the college application and financial aid processes.

As a result of this approach, NMSA has one of the strongest academic records in the state. It was one of only three schools in New Mexico in 2016 to be designated by the U.S. Department of Education as a National Blue Ribbon School and has been rated grade “A” by the New Mexico Public Education Department every year since 2012. U.S. News & World Report named it one of New Mexico’s top ten high schools in 2018. Composite ACT scores are almost nine percent higher than the national average and over fifteen percent higher than the state average. It has a ninety-five percent graduation rate and a one hundred percent college-acceptance rate.

*All academic courses comply with New Mexico Public Education Department standards to ensure every student meets the requirements for a high school diploma. The specific academic courses a student may take in a given year will be highly dependent on what level he or she has achieved in their schooling prior to enrollment at NMSA.
