HeARTbeats: Rumors

Presented with special arrangement by Samuel French

Rated PG13 for language

The NMSA Theater Department is proud to open its 2015 Fall Season with a production of Rumors by Neil Simon, directed by Joey A. Chavez and Deborah Potter.

The humorous play first premiered in 1988, and opens on the large, tastefully appointed Sneden’s Landing townhouse where the Deputy Mayor of New York has just shot himself. Though only a flesh wound, four couples are about to experience a severe attack of Farce. Gathering for their tenth wedding anniversary, the host lies bleeding in the other room and his wife is nowhere in sight. His lawyer, Ken and wife Chris must get “the story” straight before the other guests arrive. As the confusions and mis-communications mount, the evening spins off into classic farcical hilarity. Co-director Deborah Potter remarked, “It’s wonderful to see that Neil Simon’s work has become timeless.  We are staying true to his text, terse words and all!”

Theater Department Chair Joey Chavez says that producing the play with his theater students has been remarkably fun, with the cast often unable to make it all the way through certain parts due to outbursts of laughter.  Directing a comedy like this, he says, will give his students a wide scope of theater experience: many of the students in the cast of “Rumors” participated in last year’s productions of “The Shakespeare Project,” “Children’s Hour,” and/or “Radium Girls,” all works with a more dramatic theme.  Tackling a comedy allows those students to experience theater from a wide array of genres.
