He will be studying in NMSA’s instrumental music department, with a focus on cello. Mamula has been focusing on his cello studies for more than four years and has received statewide recognition for his accomplishments.
Mamula has chosen to study at NMSA so that he can continue his studies of cello in a school setting that includes orchestra, chamber music as well as precollege music curriculum. He has performed in numerous ensembles in the Los Alamos and Santa Fe area including the Santa Fe Youth Symphony.
He also was selected to participate in the Pro Musica Champs program. This summer he continued his studies at the Lamont School of Music Summer Academy. Mamula plans to finish his high school degree at the New Mexico School of the Arts and pursue music and the natural sciences in college.
Mamula has worked diligently on his cello studies to attain so many accomplishments by his freshman year. He also plays guitar and was a member of a rock band this summer. On weekends, Mamula is a serious competitor cycle cross racing and has ranked first place in a number of state events.
NMSA is now accepting applications for school year 2016-2017. There will be an open house at the school Oct. 13 and Dec. 5. The application cycle closes in mid-January. Information on admission policies and the application process can be found at www.NMSchoolForTheArts.org.
The school is a tuition free statewide charter school that offers students who excel in either music, dance, drama, visual arts or theater the opportunity to attend a highly ranked education institution centered on the preparation for a career and future studies in the arts. For its third consecutive year, NMSA has received an A rating from the New Mexico Public Education Department. The school also has a 97 percent retention rate and a 92 percent graduation rate.
NMSA’s recently graduated Class of 2015, comprised of 44 students, have been offered numerous scholarships and financial assistance amounting to more than $5.4 million. Ninety-five percent of students were accepted at higher education institutions, and one half of students are continuing to study arts. NMSA’s Class of 2015 also marks the first acceptances to colleges like Smith, Bard and Penn State, and repeat acceptances to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Oberlin College Conservatory, University of New Mexico and the Berklee College of Music.
NMSA is a public/private partnership comprised of the NMSA-Art Institute, a nonprofit art educational institution, and NMSA-High School, a New Mexico state charter high school. NMSA’s purpose is to provide the highest standards of excellence in preparing New Mexico’s artistically talented students to compete in the national arena for post-secondary education and/or professional careers in the arts.
