Making Dance for Playing House

NEW MEXICO SCHOOL FOR THE ARTS DANCE DEPARTMENT and

CENTER FOR CONTEMPORARY ARTS PRESENTS

AN INTERDISCIPLINARY PERFORMANCE INSTALLATION

(March 4th, 2015) Santa Fe, NM – On March 14 at 3:00pm, the Center for Contemporary Arts (CCA) and New Mexico School for the Arts (NMSA) Dance Department will present “Making Dance for Playing House,” an interdisciplinary performance installation in CCA’s Munoz Waxmen gallery (1050 Old Pecos Trail, Santa Fe, New Mexico). This event is free and open to the public.

The morning of March 14th the dance students of New Mexico School for the Arts will immerse themselves within the Playing House exhibit, created by the family artist team Hillerbrand + Magsamen and installed currently at the CCA’s Munoz Waxmen gallery. Using the site-specific choreographic skills they have developed in the Dance Department, NMSA students will respond through movement to the exhibition. By 3:00pm the students will have composed a performance installation loop based on the bright colors, geometric shapes, and themes of suburbia, consumerism, chaos, and family illustrated throughout the Playing House exhibit.

The performance window will last from 3:00pm-4:00pm, and audience members may come and go as they please viewing the art and the dance as an ongoing installation.

The CCA and NMSA Dance Department are thrilled to be collaborating on this interdisciplinary student driven event. “Making Dance for Playing House” is part of NMSA’s program Inside/Out, an exciting, community-centered series of site-specific performances staged in Santa Fe’s communal spaces. Inside/Out connects student artists with our vibrant communities in innovative and public ways. The event also directly supports the CCA’s two pronged vision to further open their space to the performing arts and Santa Fe’s youth. Both organizations hope to develop this pilot event into sustainable interdisciplinary programming for the Santa Fe community.

This organizational partnership is supported by Thornburg Investment Management.
