New Mexico School for the Arts Theater Department Opens Their 2014-15 Season

NMSA Theater Department is proud to open their 2014-15 season! They start October with the performance of “The Shakespeare Project,” and will conclude the month with the exciting and challenging production of Lillian Hellman’s “The Children’s Hour.”

On October 9, 10, and 11 the Theater Department will produce “The Shakespeare Project.” This compilation of Shakespeare scenes, soliloquies and sonnets adapted by James Zager was directed by department chair Joey A. Chavez.

After a three-night run at NMSA in Santa Fe, “The Shakespeare Project” will travel to Artesia, NM on October 16 and 17 to be performed at the Ocotillo Performing Arts Center along with students from the Music Department as part of NMSA’s outreach program.

On October 30, 31, and November 1 at 7pm, NMSA students will perform Lillian Hellman’s acclaimed play “The Children’s Hour,” at Warehouse 21. “The Children’s Hour”  was inspired by a true story that unfolded in Scotland in the 1930’s, wherein two women who run a school for girls find their reputations maligned and lives dismantled when a student maliciously spreads a rumor.  It’s a tragic story that depicts the power of the spoken word.

Director Elizabeth Wiseman wrote, “In taking on this project, the cast has considered the lessons of this story, and how they apply to our current times, with great depth and sensitivity. I am inspired by the mature, compassionate, and thoughtful approach that this cast has brought to the development of each character. It is a testament to the power of history, but even more, it is a testament to the possibility that we might avoid making the same mistakes again and again if the lessons of history are learned.”
