New Mexico School for the Arts Visual Arts Department presents: “Shaded, Faded, Elevated:” A 9th Grade Arts Exhibition

(March 9, 2015) SANTA FE — New Mexico School for the Arts is pleased to present an exhibition of artwork by our 9th grade Visual Arts students. Fourteen student-artists hail from New Mexico communities as diverse as Ilfeld, Las Vegas, Montezuma, Santa Clara Pueblo, and Santa Fe.

The exhibition will highlight their recent work in Drawing and 3D-Design Fundamentals.

With the guidance of visiting artist Larry Bob Phillips, students are undertaking an ambitious, architectural comic wall drawing, to be created directly on the east-facing gallery wall, inside Warehouse 21. Phillips is best known for his densely-packed drawings and site-specific murals, created primarily in black and white. His recent exhibitions have included 516 Arts (ABQ), the Albuquerque Museum, and the Center for Contemporary Art in Santa Fe.

Also on display will be “3D-design Dialogues”: student-designed, constructed, and elevated forms that respond to existing chair designs. Additional drawings relating to the comic mural and the Chair-Design project will also be featured.

NMSA’s freshman visual arts curriculum emphasizes a rigorous grounding in visual fundamentals. Students learn essential art and design skills and vocabulary, while engaging in challenging, creative play. The program is supplemented with visiting artists throughout the school year.

Participating student-artists include: Jada Baca, Liam Bell, Ruby Diercks, Lila Green, Tess Heneghan, Jane Henry, Magdalena Jablonski, Isabella Kellum, Trinitiy Lara, Broadus Mobbs, Lilia Morris-Wright, Maya Peña, Liliana Penny and Carly Trujillo.

NMSA was a recipient of the national Arts Schools Network Exemplary School Designation at their annual conference in Denver earlier this year, and has been graded an “A” school for the third year in a row from the New Mexico Public Education Department.
