Santa Fe pledges to help Sanbusco businesses

SANTA FE, NM — Shoppers won’t be able to find many of the businesses at the Sanbusco Market Center in just a few months.

Business owners recently learned they would have to pack up and leave.

“It’s sad because here we have a community. I’ve been here 15 years, and some people have been here 20 years,” Eidos Jewelry owner Gordon Lawrie said.

The mall will soon be the new location for the New Mexico School for the Arts. The sudden move still has business owners a little worried.

“Things are a little hectic. It’s like driving full force toward the abyss and you’re not quite sure what the other side looks like,” Lawrie said.

The city is trying to calm the fears of business owners by making it a smooth transition. City officials have written up a resolution that would allow waiving fees, and expediting permits and building and fire inspections to the owners as they look for new locations.

A majority of the business owners plan to move to the DeVargas Center. Lawrie’s going to the Santa Fe Railyard.

But no matter where they end up, owners hope the city will follow through on its promise.

“We’ll be how the words translate into reality,” Lawrie said.
