HeARTbeats: NMSA Alum Sarah Colvin

“NMSA is beautiful, silly, experimental, and serious… Everyone is working towards a common goal of artistic expression.”

-Sarah Colvin, class of 2015

Sarah Colvin looks back on her NMSA audition as both “terrifying and wonderful.”

A class of 2014 alumnus of the school, Sarah received a scholarship to study at the New York University Tisch School of Dramatic Writing. She came to recognize that her own pursuit of her art in theater was characterized by multi-sided, multi-dimensional challenges – rigorous academics along with a demanding arts schedule; her early wish to pursue performance and storytelling, and the mastery and discipline she received from studying those passions in a school setting.

“NMSA gave me so many opportunities I never thought I would have,” Sarah writes. “The theater department pushed me into activities and areas of art I would have never have thought of pursuing before. I became a Lensic Technical Intern through the school and found an unexpected passion for lighting design. I received a scholarship from the American Shakespeare Center to study with them in their summer intensive. I was accepted to the NYU Tisch School of Dramatic Writing and received a scholarship to pursue my dream of writing for the stage and screen where I am currently a freshman… it was only because of the teachers and artists at NMSA that I was able to find direction and give my all. The theater department taught me how to throw myself into everything I wanted to achieve.”

The pursuit of one’s art form as a career is explored realistically at NMSA, with school visits and informational sessions from relevant institutions and conservatories.

Exposure to those programs, as well as the work and challenges that might follow, helped Sarah realize, and narrow down, what specific aspects of theater might appeal to her more.

“I love theater and recognize it as my passion, but I learned that my life is with a pen and paper. I have all the tools and experience I need to make my way in my profession. If I hadn’t gone to NMSA I would be four years behind in that discovery.”

We are always thrilled and proud to hear about the journeys and accomplishments of our remarkable alumni, as well as current students!  Students in our class of 2015, graduating this June, have been offered (so far) a little over $2.8 million in the form of financial aid and scholarships from colleges, universities, and conservatories far and wide. Some institutions to which our students have been accepted include The New School, Penn State, Emerson College, Bard College, California College of the Arts, and many more!

The Theater Department visits Denver this weekend to attend a show and participate in theater workshops — Bon Voyage!
