HeARTbeats: NMSA Dance Department

New Mexico School for the Arts’ Dance Department is gearing up for a busy, exciting fall!

CONGRATULATIONS Adam McKinney!

NMSA Dance Department Chair Adam McKinney has been awarded a fellowship through the School of American Ballet! Visiting Fellows will be invited to attend two  sessions during SAB’s Winter Term to observe a range of SAB classes, attend demonstrations and meet with faculty to discuss relevant topics in dance education and curriculum.

In addition, the home school of each Visiting Fellow will receive a monetary award of $5,000, to be applied to current or future diversity-related initiatives!

August 24-30
– Guest Artist Linda Kent

Coming right up, the department welcomes Guest Artist Linda Kent August 24 – 30. A Juilliard faculty member since 1984, Ms. Kent will be teaching and setting work inspired by the Paul Taylor method with NMSA’s dancers.  Ms. Kent attended the Juilliard School of Modern Dance before joining the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in 1968, touring internationally with them until 1974.  From 1975 until 1989, she danced with the Paul Taylor Dance Company and has staged Taylor’s works for multiple fantastic dance companies around the world. Department Chair Adam McKinney hopes that the Ms. Kent’s Paul Taylor method instruction will set the stage for NMSA dancers to take on Taylor’s Cloven Kingdom next year. We’re thrilled to have Linda Kent at NMSA as part of our Guest Artist Program!

September 19-20 – Blind Spot

In a few short weeks, in partnership with the AHA Festival of Progressive Arts, the Dance Department will perform this year’s site-specific performance entitled BLIND SPOT, part of its annual Inside/Out series.  Don’t miss this collaboratively choreographed production, exploring the history of cars, truths and secrets, and underground cultures! Performances will be held in the Santa Fe Railyard underground parking garage. Visit our website as the date approaches for times and more information!
Inside/Out is a series of site-specific performances staged in Santa Fe’s communal spaces that connect student artists with our vibrant communities in innovative and public ways.
