‘Flash Mob’ on the Plaza

May 17, 2013 — Journal Santa Fe
“It Ain’t Necessarily So” — especially when you assume anything about Santa Fe or New Mexico. But in this case, it was a tune by George Gershwin that was among the selections played by more than a dozen musicians who descended on the Plaza Thursday afternoon after their classes at the New Mexico School for the Arts.

The “flash  mob” also offered melodies from J.S. Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos, adding to the variety of music that can be found almost anytime, at least in pleasant weather, at Santa Fe’s heart.

The charter school enrolls students from around the state, who must audition for a spot. Graduation will be Monday, June 3, 2013.

Catherine McDonald, 18, senior, joins 14 classmates from the New Mexico School for the Arts to give a surprise concert on the Santa Fe Plaza Thursday afternoon. McDonald is headed to the Berklee College of Music in Boston this fall.

Carlos Simeone, 18, is part of a “flash mob” that descended on Santa Fe’s Plaza Thursday to entertain passersby. The 15 musicians are from the New Mexico School for the Arts.
