New Mexico School for the Arts Theater Department Presents Joey A. Chavez’s “El Baile”

(January 11, 2016) Santa Fe, NM – New Mexico School for the Arts is proud to present “El Baile,” a play written by NMSA’s Theater Department Chair Joey A. Chavez.

Set in the summer of 1865 Santa Fe, territory of New Mexico, elements of “magical realism” weave this story of love and loss with traditional northern New Mexico song and dance. “This has been an incredible process,” says Joey Chavez.  “Historical research into the music, culture and even traditional foods of Northern New Mexico in 1865 has renewed my profound personal and familial connections.  The students also have a greater understanding and, hopefully, a better sense of where they have come from as well.”

The play is directed by Deborah Potter and Joey Chavez, and will be performed Friday, January 29 at 7pm, Saturday, January 30 at 7pm, and Sunday, January 31 at 2pm. Performances will be held at the James A. Little Theater at the New Mexico School for the Deaf, and tickets can be obtained at nmschoolforthearts.org/tickets.
