SANTA FE–New Mexico School for the Arts is proud to present “El Baile,” a play written by NMSA’s Theater Department Chair Joey A. Chavez.

Set in the summer of 1865 Santa Fe, territory of New Mexico, elements of “magical realism” weave this story of love and loss with traditional northern New Mexico song and dance. “This has been an incredible process,” Chavez said. “Historical research into the music, culture, and even traditional foods of Northern New Mexico in 1865 has renewed my profound personal and familial connections. The students also have a greater understanding and, hopefully, a better sense of where they have come from as well.”

The play is directed by Deborah Potter and Joey Chavez, and will be performed 7pm, Friday and Saturday Jan. 29-30 and again at 2pm Sunday, January 31.

Performances will be held at the James A. Little Theater at the New Mexico School for the Deaf, and tickets can be obtained at www.nmschoolforthearts.org/tickets.
